But thousands of refugees from Bhutan who have resettled in the country have struggled to access these guidelines, says Bhuwan Gautam, a researcher who studies the wellbeing of Bhutanese families in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many Bhutanese refugees don\u2019t understand English and can\u2019t read the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/advice-for-public\">recommendations<\/a>\u00a0provided by the World Health Organization, says Gautam, a refugee from Bhutan who resettled in Massachusetts in 2008. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/downloads\/sick-with-2019-nCoV-fact-sheet-nepali.pdf\">provide tips<\/a>\u00a0in Nepali, the language Bhutanse refugees speak, many members of the community can\u2019t read it, he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have tons of information available, but our community members are mostly illiterate in their own language and can\u2019t access it,\u201d says Gautam, who advises the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bswmusa.org\/\">Bhutanese Society of Western Massachusetts<\/a>, a nonprofit that supports Bhutanse refugees who live in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gautam recently teamed up with faculty and staff in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bc.edu\/content\/bc-web\/schools\/ssw.html\">Boston College School of Social Work<\/a>\u00a0to solve this problem, creating six videos in Nepali to help Bhutanese refugees respond to the coronavirus in safe, healthy, and productive ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They recruited teachers, epidemiologists, and public health professionals in the Bhutanese community to provide tips to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bswmusa\/videos\/1976383249161277\/\">prevent<\/a>\u00a0the coronavirus,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UotDODnDlrI&amp;feature=youtu.be\">dispel myths<\/a>\u00a0about the disease, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sWSXhZlHey4&amp;feature=youtu.be\">present strategies<\/a>\u00a0for parents to help their children cope with the pandemic. The videos, posted to Facebook and YouTube, have racked up more than 50,000 views in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe felt the urgent need to get out public health messaging that addressed cultural concerns in the Bhutanse community in their native language,\u201d says Jenna Berent, who manages the Refugee Behavioral Health Program in the School of Social Work. \u201cWe made sure that the videos were led by Bhutanse professionals who could share information through their lens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bc-quote-section parbase section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<section class=\"quote-section-new q_white\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-sm-12\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe felt the urgent need to get out public health messaging that addressed cultural concerns in the Bhutanse community in their native language.\u00a0\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"author\">JENNA BERENT,\u00a0MANAGER OF THE REFUGEE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROGRAM<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bc-text parbase section\">\n<div class=\"text-new content None None\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/blog\/2016\/03\/11\/bhutanese-refugees-find-home-america\">85,000 refugees<\/a>\u00a0from Bhutan, a small country nestled between China, India, and Nepal, have resettled in the United States over the past two decades. Most of the refugees come from camps in Nepal, where they lived for years following what Berent describes as an \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d perpetrated by a Buddhist regime intent on forcing Hindu citizens to leave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The video series builds on an ongoing project led by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bc.edu\/content\/bc-web\/schools\/ssw\/sites\/rpca.html\">Research Program on Children and Adversity<\/a>\u00a0in the School of Social Work to improve the health and wellbeing of families in the Bhutanese refugee community. Well-trained staff affiliated with social service agencies visit the homes of families in the community to help caregivers and their children manage stress, improve communication, and navigate the education system in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A study published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(19)30434-3\/abstract\"><i>Journal of Adolescent Health<\/i><\/a>\u00a0found that families who participated in the program argued less compared to families that did not participate. Children showed fewer signs of depression and behaved better than their counterparts who did not receive help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G-PXnZGdjrw\" width=\"860\" height=\"615\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Berent says that refugees from Bhutan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/immigrantrefugeehealth\/profiles\/bhutanese\/health-information\/mental-health\/index.html\">commit suicide<\/a>\u00a0at a higher rate than the general population and often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3633362\/\">struggle to control<\/a>\u00a0their use of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAdapting to U.S. culture here has been difficult,\u201d she says. \u201cDealing with the stressors of resettling has caused substance use, and many live in subsidized housing and struggle to pay rent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Berent and Gautam hope that the videos will help to inform the decisions Bhutanese refugees make as they navigate life in the middle of a global pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In one video, a social epidemiologist described the symptoms of the coronavirus and dispelled myths about COVID-19, such as that eating garlic and drinking warm water can ward off the disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In another video, a high school teacher who founded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bhutaneseliterature.com\/\">bhutaneseliterature.com<\/a>\u00a0provided tips for parents to help their children continue to learn at home while their schools are closed.
