Submission
Bhutaneseliterature.com is a premier platform for Bhutanese literature, publishing writing in English and Nepali. Our writers include Bhutanese people at home, members of the Bhutanese and Nepali-speaking diaspora around the world, and anyone with a genuine interest in our literature, language, and culture.
We publish poetry, short stories, personal essays, and memoir, as well as articles on society, culture, history, identity, migration, and language. We also welcome literary criticism, book reviews, translations, and research that documents Bhutanese literature, folklore, oral traditions, songs, and customs. Difficult subjects are welcome when handled with care, accuracy, and respect for the people involved.
We hold our work to a literary standard. We are also a community site that values inclusion and the preservation of heritage. Submissions should be thoughtful and carefully edited. We especially welcome young and new writers, because a strong idea and an honest voice matter to us as much as experience.
- Submissions must be sent as an editable document (Microsoft Word or Google Docs) in 12-point font, double-spaced.
- First-time contributors must include their full name, city and country of residence, an author biography of no more than four sentences, and a single landscape-oriented photograph with a plain, uncluttered background. The profile is required only with the first submission.
- Your work must be your own. Plagiarized work, or AI-generated text presented as original writing, will be rejected. The editorial team may run plagiarism checks.
- We prefer unpublished work. If the piece has appeared elsewhere, such as on a blog or social media, tell us where and when.
- Translations must include permission from the original writer or rights holder.
- Writers are responsible for any copyright issues their work raises.
- Submit your writings to: editor.bhutaneseliterature@gmail.com
As a matter of editorial policy, articles containing discriminatory or abusive language will be rejected.
What happens after you submit
We will confirm that your submission has been received, and the relevant desk editor will review it. If your piece is accepted, we may suggest edits for clarity, language, or length, but we will not make significant changes without your agreement. We aim to respond within four weeks, though we may not be able to give detailed feedback on pieces we decline. Accepted pieces are published with your name and profile and shared through our pages.
Please note
We hope to publish in Dzongkha and other Bhutanese languages in the future. Please keep a copy of your work, because submissions that are not accepted are not returned. By submitting, you agree to these guidelines, which the editorial board may update at any time.
We look forward to reading your work.
