After meticulously analyzing the novel Prahelika by J.N. Dahal, having read it more than three times, I conclude that the author masterfully demonstrates how various societal aspects significantly influence one’s existence. Dahal adeptly utilizes English words, phrases, and metaphors to enhance the novel’s relevance in the context of contemporary life. This blend of languages fosters a stronger connection between the literatures of two different languages over time. I extend my gratitude to novelist Dahal for introducing a new trend in Nepali literature.
Author J.N. Dahal presents contemporary social realities and human psychology in a simple yet engaging style, which successfully captivates readers. The novel endeavours to alter societal perspectives on gender diversity and sexual issues, encouraging readers to reflect on and understand these topics more deeply. Prahelika unveils various societal elements, such as nationality and psychological complexities. It depicts how we navigate these diversities and how even successful individuals struggle with understanding their identity and abilities. Idealism and spirituality stress the importance of self-awareness, yet in the quest for self-realization, we often find ourselves ensnared at different levels.
Our identity is shaped by birth, home, traditions, language, and culture, while history defines our existence. The main character, Anushka, born in Nepal and educated in the United States, faces challenges in understanding her emotional interests early in her marriage. The novel portrays Anushka’s struggle with her identity and the associated conflicts, specifically her journey towards understanding her asexuality. This narrative highlights issues of gender diversity and sexual complexities, particularly within the framework of Eastern philosophy and the modern era. The book courageously addresses gender diversity and sexual issues in society, emphasizing the significance of identity and existence in today’s global society. Personal goals can only be set after understanding these fundamental aspects. The novel effectively illustrates gender discrimination and psychological complexities, particularly through Anushka’s experiences and relationships, including those with her husband, Miles. It offers a realistic portrayal of social realities in a straightforward and engaging manner. Beyond Anushka’s story, the novel also explores the social, cultural, and gender contexts of the United States. The depiction of the “Pride Heritage Society” environment and institutional structure is particularly notable. A Bhutanese writer has successfully translated the American societal context into Nepali literature through this work.
The novel is more captivating than many modern Nepali films, revealing contemporary social realities and provoking thought on issues of gender diversity and sexual complexities. By delving into Anushka’s story of conflict and struggle, readers gain insight into societal gender discrimination and the importance of personal identity.
