Letter to my children

My Dear Children,
Witnessing your growth is a journey filled with joy and happiness, as you evolve into the unique individuals you are meant to be. However, I find myself examining the uncertainties of this growing world and the impact it will have on the wonderful people you are becoming.

Life has changed so much over the years. When I was your age, it was a different era altogether. My childhood memories are filled with playing in the mud, collecting stones and marbles, climbing trees, and tasting the simplicity of life. The concept of shoes didn’t enter my world until I turned 18 yrs. and started college. Most of the time, we walked barefoot or slipped on flip-flop slippers.

Reflecting on the past, my 86-year-old paternal grandmother shares tales of raising a large family amidst paddy field work, tending to animals, and preparing meals for the entire household over a firewood stove. Basic necessities like soap and laundry detergent were luxuries, and washing dishes and clothes involved the use of firewood ash.
Equally, my mother, upon arriving to the United States expressed the distinct contrast between her past and present. She reminisces about a time when baby diapers and menstruation pads were unfamiliar concepts, highlighting the drastic changes in lifestyle and culture.

As you navigate through the complexities of this modern world, I want you to appreciate the roots that have shaped our family’s journey. Embrace the simplicity of life, learn from the resilience of those who came before us, and remember the invaluable lessons embedded in our history.
I have faith that, with your unique perspectives and the wisdom passed down through generations, you will face the challenges of this growing world with strength and grace. Always cherish the rich tapestry of our family’s stories, for they hold the essence of who we are.

With Love
Kumari
