Rijal Honored with INLS Best Lyrics-Gazal Award

International Nepali Literary Society (INLS) has honoured Bhutanese lyricist Khem Rijal with “INLS Laxman Satyal Best Lyrics-Gazal Award,” presented biennially. The award, established by INLS in recognition of Lakshman Satyal, was conferred upon Khem Rijal for his exceptional contributions in the realm of lyrics and gazal compositions, particularly for his work titled “Urja,” an anthology of lyrics published by the Literature Council of Bhutan (LCOB) in June 2022.

According to the official statement released after the award announcement, the award ceremony will be held during a special event commemorating the upcoming Lakshmi Jayanti.

INLS, a non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, strives to become the foremost global platform for Nepali creators and cultural activists dedicated to preserving and promoting Nepali cultural heritage. According to its Mission Statement, INLS accomplishes this objective by fostering the creation, publication, distribution, translation, and scholarly study of Nepali language, literature, art, music, and dance, thus ensuring their enduring legacy.

Hailing originally from Dagapela, Bhutan, and currently residing in Ohio, USA, Khem Rijal is a highly respected lyricist renowned for his profound contributions to the realms of music and poetry. With a distinguished artistic talent, Rijal has made an indelible mark on Nepalese literature.

His notable works encompass noteworthy publications such as “Kinarako Chhal,” an anthology of gazals, “Dhumil joon”, a poetry collection and music albums including “Pahilo Bhet,” “Riya-Ridam,” “Manjur chha” and “Kadar,” which aptly demonstrate his versatility as a lyricist and poet. Rijal has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including a lifetime membership in the Vindhya Vasini Foundation, recognition from the Dr Khagendra Sports Foundation and honour from Prayas Manch Nepal and the Lyricist Association of Nepal.

As an influential figure within the Bhutanese community, Rijal actively contributes to various organizations and is a leader, mentor, and activist. Through his profound artistic contributions, Khem Rijal continues to inspire and captivate audiences with his literary brilliance.

Rijal currently holds the position of Secretary at LCOB and serves as the President of the Bhutanese American Music Association (BAMA). The LCOB extends warm congratulations to him on this well-deserved award and wishes him continued success in his future literary endeavours.
