Ramesh Gautam is a writer, journalist, educator and researcher based in Stavanger, Norway. Born in 1983 in Lamidara, a village in Chirang district in southern Bhutan, he fled the country with his parents in 1992. The family subsequently lived in a refugee camp administered by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Morang district, eastern Nepal. Gautam completed his secondary education in the refugee camp before earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Tribhuvan University in Nepal.
After settling in Norway, Gautam completed a postgraduate certificate in education, a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering and a master’s degree in mathematics didactics at the University of Stavanger. He works as a lecturer in physics and mathematics at an upper-secondary school in Stavanger.
In 2025, he completed a PhD in mathematics didactics at the University of Stavanger. His doctoral dissertation, TPACK in Teacher Education: Exploring Pre-service Teachers’ Knowledge to Integrate Technology in Mathematics, examined how Norwegian pre-service teachers develop and apply technological, pedagogical and subject-matter knowledge in mathematics education. His research interests include digital technology in education, teacher knowledge, assessment, quantitative educational measurement and comparative studies.
Gautam has been active in Bhutanese literature since his school years. He founded Bhutaneseliterature.com in May 2009, helping to establish it as the first online platform devoted to Bhutanese literature. He has served as its Managing Editor and coordinated publication activities for the Literature Council of Bhutan, where he serves as Publication Director.
He was also associated with Bhutan News Service, contributing news reports, feature articles, interviews and panel discussions. His journalistic work included contributions to Saranarthi Sarokar, a refugee-focused radio programme broadcast from Kathmandu and Jhapa.
Alongside his academic, literary and journalistic activities, Gautam writes in Nepali, English and Norwegian about displacement, refugee identity, Bhutanese history, diaspora experiences, education and post-resettlement Bhutanese literature. His work brings together research, education, literature and journalism, reflecting both his professional experience in Norway and his personal journey from Bhutan through refugee life in Nepal.
